The Beautiful Dead

Everyone in this world is Dead.

Well, almost dead.
Somewhere in between.
At least that's what the strange lady told me
after pulling my body out of the ground,
fixing me up to look like a Beautiful Living Woman
and giving me the name of Winter.

Whoever that is.

I have no memory of my First Life,
but I'm promised that will come back. Someday.
And according to everyone
in this civilized Undead town
full of a zillion useless laws I must follow,
I'm not doing a spectacular job
of living my Second Life.

But worst of all, I've broken the Dead's most absolute law:
I made a forbidden friend.

His name is John.
He's handsome. Brooding. A little rude.
And might or might not totally despise me.
But he's on the run.
He needs my help.
And I might be the only one who can give it ...

If it weren't for one unfortunate fact:
He has a heartbeat.
