About Fantasy

Fantasy is a major speculative fiction genre that features supernatural, magical, or impossible elements -- things that cannot (and often could not) exist in our real world according to known laws of physics, nature, or science. At its core, fantasy stories involve magic, mythical creatures, gods, witches, dragons, enchanted objects, cursed lands, or otherworldly forces, set in imaginary worlds, alternate histories, or our own world with hidden magic layered on top. The genre draws heavily from folklore, mythology, fairy tales, and legends, and it often explores themes like good vs. evil, heroism, destiny, power, identity, and the human (or non-human) spirit.

Key Characteristics:
- Magic or the supernatural is real and central -- no scientific explanation required (unlike science fiction).
- Worlds can be fully invented (with their own rules, history, maps, languages) or our world + fantastical intrusions.
- Creatures and races: Elves, dwarves, orcs, fae, dragons, unicorns, demons, etc.
- Often includes quests, prophecies, chosen ones, epic battles, ancient evils, or personal journeys of discovery.
- Tone ranges from whimsical and light-hearted to dark, grim, and horrifying.
- Internal consistency is key: Authors create their own "magic systems" (rules) that must be followed within the story.

Major Subgenres:
- High/Epic Fantasy -- Vast invented worlds, grand quests, good vs. evil on a massive scale.
- Magical Realism -- Magical elements intrude on our world.
- Urban Fantasy -- Modern cities + supernatural beings/magic.
- Dark Fantasy -- Grim, horror-tinged, morally gray.
- Romantasy (Romance + Fantasy) -- Heavy romance focus with fantasy elements (very popular now).
- Sword & Sorcery -- Heroic individuals, gritty adventures, often pulp-style.
- Portal Fantasy -- Characters from our world enter a magical realm.
- Grimdark -- Cynical, brutal, anti-heroic take on high fantasy.
- Cozy Fantasy -- Gentle, low-stakes, feel-good magic and community.

Fantasy is imaginative fiction built on magic, supernatural forces, mythical creatures, and invented worlds -- where the impossible becomes real, and the story explores wonder, heroism, darkness, or romance beyond the limits of our reality. The genre has ancient roots (myths, fairy tales, epics like Beowulf or The Arabian Nights) but exploded in modern form with Tolkien in the mid-20th century. Today it's one of the biggest and most diverse genres in publishing.
