The mayhem begins when Rex receives a less than favorable critique delivered by a Workshop celebrity, Dallas McGuire. McGuire, author of The Roach's Dream, is more widely known for his romantic escapades and drug dealings than his writing skills. When he's found dead in an alley—his skull bashed in with a beer bottle—the police discover that while many writers were angry at McGuire's heavy handling of their manuscripts, Rex was the only one mad enough to attack him at the local meeting place, Ye Olde Trail Tavern.
