What Lies Hidden

Her curiosity was going to get her into trouble some day. Annika Weir had been hearing that for as long as she could remember. Living in New Bailey, a quiet village hidden well away in an isolated corner of the grasslands, she was supposed to stay home, do her chores, and be prudent and predictable like her older sisters. She was supposed to, but never did. If she was predictable, she wouldn't have answered the door in the middle of a storm when neither of her brothers were there to protect her. If she was prudent, she would have closed it again once she saw the rain-drenched stranger standing on the porch. But she wasn't, and she didn't.
