When Rachel Penniston takes a post as governess in an isolated mansion on the Cornish Coast, she is swept up in the intrigue of her surroundings and in her unexpected attraction to a handsome stranger. The atmosphere of Talisman abruptly changes, however, with the arrival of Verdonia Templeton. Though Rachel tries to accept Verdonia's strange ways, she can't shake a feeling of uneasiness. A series of disturbing events threatens to disrupt the once peaceful household and heightens Rachel's misgivings.
