Miss Cackle's Academy for Witches stood dark and shadowy at the top of a mountain. All the students were dressed in black from head to toe, and with their broomsticks and black kittens they made quite an impressive sight. But there was one witch whose bootlaces always trailed along the floor, whose kitten was grey instead of black, and who was afraid of the dark. She was the worst witch of all—Mildred Hubble.*

This was Mildred's first year at the Academy. You could always rely on her to crash her broomstick into the dustbin during flying practice or brew the wrong potion in laboratory—she was always in trouble. And just when she thinks her career as a witch has come to an end, Mildred surprises everyone—especially herself!
