Farm and forest, farmer and king: there are ancient compacts between each group, and the well-being of the nation requires that these compacts be renewed at times of change. Young Kdano Luchenna is heir to the most illustrious line of work leader-farmers in the land, but unless he can prove himself a true son of his fathers, his own work group may reject him, the akasifi (forest spirits) will break their covenant and return the hard-won farmlands to wilderness, and Kdano will fail both his king and his country.
