Journeymen magicians Marcus and Robb have been sent on a quest by Senior Magician Jaylor to find the missing dragons of Coronnan and bring them back to the kingdom. But their quest leads to a far different discovery, an ancient treasure trove, spell-protected to trap the unwary. And even as the two are caught by the treasure's spell, unable to aid Coronnan or themselves, other events are unfolding which may forever alter the course of their kingdom's destiny.

Margit, now studying to become a journeyman magician in her own right, becomes alarmed over Marcus' continued absence and takes up her own quest to find him.

And Jack--who having come into his own magical powers has been serving as protector to King Darville--finds himself torn between conflicting duties and loyalties. He has sworn to free Queen Rossemikka from the cat personality which shares her body. But his own true love Katrina is determined to return to SeLenicca, bringing with her the one-magic which could free her own queen from a spell-induced trance. How can Jack abandon Coronnan for its ancestral enemy of SeLenicca? Yet how can he give up Katrina? And if he follows her, should it be to help her or stop her? For with the queen of SeLenicca unable to rule, the kingdom has been thrown into chaos and is no longer a threat to Coronnan. Is there path Jack can take which will not see him branded traitor to one side or the other?
