Rory McSpade was born with a mutated gene that caused him to look different from other people. Even as a child he had hair growing on portions of his face that are normally bare. When faced with the sorrows of the Irish Potato Famine of the 1840's and a need to provide a home for not only himself, but also for his two younger sisters, he risked his life to sail to America. America was the land of dreams and gave him his only hope of being able to provide for his family.
