The ancient battle between High and Low Church breaks out anew in a little English town. The first casualties for High are the statues and rosary beads of the church of St. Mary the Virgin. For Low, it is the reformist vicar himself, found murdered among the chapel's quaint Anglo-Catholic shrines.

It seems this enthusiastic man-of-the-cloth had rubbed a host of people the wrong way--including a pair of pious spinsters, an animal rights group, and his own wife. The police are convinced that a particular devout young man is the culprit. But solicitor-turned-amateur sleuth David Middleton-Brown and his friend Lucy follow another trail. From nave to apse they will need all their investigative acumen to spot the dark soul amid the pomp and ceremony--a sinner beyond redemption harboring secrets and planning the death of yet another victim.
