The Sinkhole

Beatty Field used to be a strawberry farm, but after a storm, it collapsed into a massive sinkhole. It's become a place where young people swim and make out, and dream of getting away from Wren Township. But I never got away -- I married Iris and was content. Then Iris drowned in that sinkhole, and I was left with alone with our ten-year-old daughter, Sylvia.

As time passed, dangerous crossbred snakes filled the deep water, and Sylvia withdrew more and more from me. We seemed to have nothing to say to one another ... until the night we crashed our car in the sinkhole.
