L.A. private eye Mike Garrett is in Lancaster, Pa., to testify in court. The work is routine and quiet until the alluring Lenore Stevens livens things up by hiring Garrett to find her missing husband.

Finding Charles Stevens is easy. He's at the Shady Lodge Motel with a bullet in his heart and a gun in his hand. And laid out so neatly, he's done half the undertaker's work. Too neatly for Garrett to believe it's suicide, despite what the cops say.

But who would want dead the man whose business employs most of the town's residents? Or is it how many would want him dead?
