Comic books are dying.

And so are the people who create them.

It's 1951 and the comic book industry is undergoing a recession that's sent half the writers and artists in New York to the streets in search of work. Among that number is writer Max Wiser, former pulp scribe and son of a legendary NYPD homicide cop on whose life Wiser based his bestselling pulp stories.

But when comics' top writer dies in a suspicious drunken fall from a moving subway train, Max is plunged into a world of lies, conspiracy, and murder . . . and finds that there is often a fine line between reality and the pulp fiction he writes.
