They say humankind lived in harmony in this world of peace and plenty, until the Red Fever. Now only ragged bands of warring tribes remain.

Kestrel Stoneheart isn’t concerned with stories, or the forbidden cities haunted by the ghosts of the Red Fever. She has only one thing on her mind. Survive the Kill. Each Potential has one chance to perform the rite of the Kill and earn the right to stand beneath the Bone Tree and become a Red Hand, an elite warrior of her tribe. Failures are given one name: unworthy. Their punishment? They are cast out into the Dead Lands where no one survives. In her tribe death is better than disgrace.

But unknown to Kestrel, her world has secrets, and someone is quietly uncovering them. Soon they will threaten not only her life, but also the lives of everyone she loves and the few remaining survivors of humanity.
