About This Book

THE MAKING OF MURDER ON MOLOKA‘I comprises sixty-plus pages of previously unpublished excerpts from the classic Hawaiian mystery, including descriptions by the author as to how each excerpt fit into the longer and fuller novel he originally envisioned.

During the eight years Chip Hughes worked on this first mystery in the Surfing Detective series, his nearly four-hundred-page early drafts shrunk to a finished book of less than two hundred. The most compelling of the sacrificed material appears in this new ebook (and also in the Slate Ridge Press edition of MURDER ON MOLOKA‘I). These never before seen pages give us glimpses into the creative process behind the novel, from the author's first conception of his PI Kai Cooke, originally called "Keahi," to an entire four-chapter subplot concerning another case Kai was working when the Moloka‘i investigation began, to parts of numerous other chapters and an epilogue that were also cut.

Taken together, these previously unpublished pieces and the explanatory notes that precede them expand our conception of the Surfing Detective and his Hawai‘i and add rich and vivid backstory to his character. A must for fans of the wave-riding gumshoe!
