Cordelia Sinclair has come to Florence to study opera and experience life for the first time on her own terms. But she arrives in a city terrorized by a killer dubbed Lo Squartatore--the Slasher--as the body of a Roman Catholic cardinal is found with his throat slit. It's the third in a string of prominent citizens murdered with no evidence but the manner of death to connect them.

When a fourth murder occurs, Detective Carlo Arbati begins to make the bizarre connections, recognizing that there is a method to the Slasher's madness.

But neither Cordelia nor Arbati realize the role she will play in drawing out a cleverly concealed killer poised to strike again.
