Magnus Trygg, temporarily in charge of the High Coast district, is called out to a body with a knife in its back. August Frisk, who alerted him, insists he's never seen the man before, and the others living there agree. The only suspect is Paulus, a Sami reindeer herder who flees to the White Sea where the Russian authorities prove uncooperative.
