The Curse of Indian Gold

The hills of southern Ohio still ring with the echo of musket shot and the slice of the tomahawk. Burial mounds still await discovery. If those of the old ways were still around, there would be curses flying when the tombs best left undiscovered are opened to the light of day. In the mid 1950s such a tomb was uncoveredâ€"filled with golden treasure. Monamee (Cherokee Indian princess) was an old woman at the time. The fact that she had to place such a curse on her own grandson was more than she could bear. That she had to watch the curse unfold over the course of six years was enough to drive her crazy. But it wasn’t she who lost her mind. Her grandson entered an asylum for the weak-minded after witnessing the deaths of his five companionsâ€"one year apartâ€"on the anniversary of the desecration, October 26, as predicted, in the ways predicted.
