The Hurst's are one of those pleasantly leisured English families who never have to worry about where the central heating is coming from. They love each other, but don't interfere with each others antics. While in the bleak wilds of Yorkshire, Julian was to make one of the most exciting discoveries of his career -- and take a disastrous gamble on love.

Julian Hurst was in love with Alexandra Bell, Alexandra Bell was in love with Julian Hurst. She had no doubts about that, and being engaged to Julian was delightful. Yet, somehow, as a husband, she felt he might prove less perfect -- until she had taught him the little lesson he needed. Julian learnt it in Scotland, Yorkshire, Devon, London. His mystified family looked on.

When Julian Hurst went into partnership in an art business instead of in the family firm of solicitors, his family was surprised that he made such a success of it.

They would have been still more surprised if they had known what his business trip to Yorkshire to view some Clauval paintings was to lead to.

His engagement to the delightful but mysterious Alexandra, and her subsequent disappearance which led him such a dance through Scotland, Yorkshire, Devon, and London, provoked behavior which seemed odd, to say the least of it.
