The Confessions of St. Zach

After six and a half days of steady shoveling with the inefficient garden spades, Jacob Zachary and his seventeen-year-old son, Lucas, managed to finish clearing the heavily-drifted snow along a 500-plus yard exposed stretch of the narrow, private road. Enough at least to get around the rocky windward side of Mt. George, and down into the more protected beginning of heavy tree cover. They could see patches un-shoveled blacktop ahead as the road dropped down and curved out of sight into the dense oak and madrone forest. The two stood under the trees, caught their breaths, looked back toward the mostly snowbound cabin, and admired the results of their work.
