June 5, 1964 - Graduation day at New Era High School - they were a bright new generation setting out on a journey of discovery that would take them from a small town in Ohio to every corner of a country torn apart by violence...caught in a struggle that would pit black against white, hawk against dove, man against woman, and old against young. This is the story of Sally and Hurd, two young people whose passionate love forced them to overcome the bitter differences that made them enemies. It is the story of their classmates - those who fought in Vietnam and those who fought at home, those who destroyed their lives and those who survived at a terrible price, those who lost their innocence and those who found new hope. Most of all, this is a portrait of ourselves.
