Someone has been stealing the livestock from the farmers of Mount Hope, and Katie Zook is determined to find out who. Five animals have been taken so far, and she seems to be the only person interested in finding the culprit. And after a returned cow gives her a helpful clue, Katie knows she's getting even closer to the answer. But when a man is found dead on a neighboring farm, the stakes are suddenly much higher. And it doesn't help that the farm is owned by David Esch, who broke her heart not long ago. With both David and her Grossmammi named as suspects, though, she can't let her past cloud her mind. Now Katie must use her wits to catch the thief red-handed, and discover the murderer's true identity.
