When Brett Blue Blake's mother dies, his Aunt Emily reveals the secret the family has kept all of Brett's life. The father he has known is not his biological parent. His real dad was John Blue, a guitarist in a Country-Western band in Texas who was murdered in Waco when Brett was an infant. Brett's mother returned to her home in New York City with her baby and married Tom Blake, who adopted the child. Brett decides to leave his career as a stockbroker on Wall Street to put together a Country-Western band and travel Texas in hopes of finding John Blue's family as well as discovering who killed him. Brett also hopes to win the heart of the beautiful Texan, Laura Wynne, whom he met when she visited New York. Brett writes songs for his band to perform. One is "Texas Bootstomp Boogie," which describes his transition from stockbroker to musician.
