Gilbert Gamesh and Enkidu Sanchez could hardly be more different. Gil is the son of a prominent politician and an opera singer; Enkidu's parents work at the local university. Gil is an acknowledged student leader and an A student; Enkidu's severe dyslexia confines him to remedial classes, though he is easily as brilliant as Gil. But they share a love for wrestling and a powerful competitive drive which brings them into contact and conflict, beginning with the day that Gil refers to Enkidu as "homo Neanderthalensis" in the locker room and provokes their first fight.
