On the same day Peregrine takes wing for a messenger job, Rose faces an epidemic. She is an insect-like aemet, young and recently hurried into her mage position — and dozens of her neighbours are showing symptoms of gripthia. Without enough healing magic, they will die. Unable to save her people alone, Rose sends out a plea for help. A plea that reaches compassionate Tillian's ears.
For the greater good, Peregrine leaves to fly for supplies, while Tillian stays to nurse the ill. While gripthia spreads across the land, Peregrine wonders whether he can live for himself, whether Tillian wants to live without him, and whether Rose and her villagers will live at all.
