Elspeth, a young woman studying music in New York on a scholarship and working part-time, becomes involved with an instructor. She receives word her entire family has died in a boat explosion and returns to Arizona with her fiance to settle the family affairs. He deserts her and she decides to recover in Mexico, where the Monarch Butterflies overwinter, She hires Gabriel, a mysterious roadside handyman, to help her clean up her estate and teach her Spanish. He agrees to take her with him to his native village in Mexico, where he has an obligation to fulfill.
