The tactic, if it works, will take a lot of training to perfect. Meanwhile, Winkle goes to find the sounds that the boson heard in the cave at Isis’ Inlet. He finds the sounds (Tarkins digging to rescue the Scavians), starts digging a hole to stop them and is captured and grievously injured in the process. The doctor, himself still recovering from nearly fatal wounds, has to go harvest rare mushrooms from the same monster- infested tunnels where Winkle was injured in order to heal the Gnome. Madison, himself, is severely reinjured but insists on finishing his task. In the mean time, Duchess Dielos’s captor jails her in a wretched dungeon, where she wakes up to a horrible stench and little or no hope of escape. What will become of her? Will any of them survive?
