Bootham was a dreary Yorkshire town, without wealth, beauty, and especially class. But it did have a Member of Parliament ... until the Honorable James Partridge sinned against both God and Bootham by throwing himself into the Thames.

Well, perhaps he was pushed. So thought London Police Superintendent Sutcliffe from the moment he questioned the elegant widow, who never shed a tear, and met the candidates gathered like vultures for a chance at Partridge's seat. Politics made for strange bedfellows, but was an illicit affair behind the puzzling case? Or a passion so great it climaxed in murder for love, money... or even higher office?
