Geoff Walker, retired and bored, had to choose between being the marshal and chairman of the Paloma, New Mexico school board. With a background in law and a dusty law degree packed away, he chose marshal. Until the day that he found Juan Valdez crucified it seemed like a good choice. The old man had been nailed to the trunk of a cottonwood tree in a clearing on the side of a mountain; complete with a crown of barbed-wire thorns and a message in blood above his head. As Marshal Walker begins his investigation he faces one major question: is the death of Juan Valdez a murder? It is a crime that no one wants to see investigated and a question no one wants answered.
