Polly Jean Davis, born to a rural Appalachian farm family, marries her high school sweetheart, Doug Barnes, after graduation, ending her dream of attending the University of Virginia. After enduring twelve years of marriage to an unfaithful husband, she seizes an opportunity to reclaim her dream and redefine her life. Upon arrival in Charlottesville, hoping to earn money to help pay for college, she takes a job working with Rick Beeson, a Private Investigator. Polly soon finds herself engulfed in the underworld of drug dealers, assassins and corporate greed. More than once Polly longs for the shelter and the safety of her Appalachian Mountain home - but the life she has found and the love of a kind and gentle man are stronger than the pull of her mountain roots.
