About This Book

The otter twins, Lukas and Jaxon, are having a difficult autumn. It's very hot and there has been no rain for a long time in their Northern California home, so the river is drying up and the fish are dying. They are having trouble finding food. Finally a storm arrives, but it's a dry lightning storm. The lightning starts a forest fire. Together with their parents and the Badger family, the twins flee from the fire. They do their best to help each other and stay calm, but the fire catches up. A falling tree traps Mr and Mrs Badger behind its burning branches. Their daughter, Camila, grabs Lukas's magic stick, and brings forth magic. The magic pushes away the fire so Mr and Mrs Badger can escape. All of them run for the Beaver family pond. There the flooded forest doesn't burn and they can find safety. The otter twins discover that the raccoon who originally gave them the magic rock and stick has also escaped to the pond. Lukas's magic stick got left behind, to be burned up by the fire, and he apologizes to the raccoon. Jaxon also explains that he traded the magic rock for a crystal so that a sea otter could find her family. The raccoon forgives them for losing the magical items, and uses the crystal to push back the wildfire smoke so that everyone at the pond can breathe easily. He goes to sleep holding up the magic shield. Jaxon and Lukas rejoin their parents, where they talk about the fire and mourn together. In the morning, the raccoon is gone, but Camila has the crystal now. The other twins decide she can keep it.
