In the third Jan Birch Mystery, Jan fulfills a dream by getting a part-time job that utilizes her artistic skills and finally realizes she must come to some resolution of her marriage after she begins a tentative relationship with local police officer, Ernie Connors. Though the affair remains strictly plutonic, Jan feels things she's never felt before. When Ernie's wife is discovered stuffed into the freezer in their garage, Ernie is quickly accused of the crime. Unable to believe the man she's fallen in love with is a murderer, Jan secretly begins to investigate.
