Sherlock Holmes' longtime housekeeper Emma Hudson has already proven herself remarkably astute at solving murders. After successfully cracking two cases the Master was too busy to handle, .the lady sleuth and her sidekick Vi Warner are now called upon to investigate a murder among the rich and famous that has left Scotland Yard without a clue.

Edgar Bramwell, head of one of the largest companies in England, and his wife, Jane, were entertaining an intimate gathering of friends the night he died mysteriously. A mesmerist hired to provide an evening's entertainment had hypnotized the group. But Edgar never woke up, and no one in the room remembers a thing.

Now, with one dead body, no eyewitnesses, a missing murder weapon, and a mesmerist who has done a disappearing act, Emma Hudson and her friend Vi are asked to pull off a performance the Yard just can't seem to manage: make a murderer appear out of thin air.
