When they arrived at the strange, brooding, desolate house in the black-forested hills, Marianne was warned by her aunt never to mention the past. She was to pretend that her aunt was her mother and not to think or speak of the evil she had left behind.

But the house in the woods was like a devil's magnet, drawing nameless terror closer to the surface each day. She was surrounded by people who seemed to fear her, hate her...people that her own, futile inner voice of innocence told her were trying to drive her into a dungeon of darkness from which there was no escape....
