DEX-4 is a technological marvel, a robot built from human DNA and computer chips: a machine with a brain. Its creator, Brian Childs, was about to become a very rich man. Instead he's a very dead one.

Former P.I. Tommy Case prefers sailing to detective work, but when Childs's fiancee, Tommy's ex-secretary, asks him for help, he reluctantly agrees. Then the case turns personal when his boat and the woman are blown up in an explosion meant for him.
