Homicide Investigator Pete Culnane returns from paternity leave to his work with the St. Paul Police Department. He is still grappling with a question: how can he successfully combine parenting with the long hours often required of detectives. Before sunrise on his fourth day back, he's notified that he and his partner Martin Tierney have a new murder to solve. While questioning the victim's family, coworkers, business associates, and neighbors, they uncover multiple motives. Learning about the disappearance of one of the victim's neighbors heightens the tension, because her survival might depend upon their reaching her in time.
