About This Book
‘The writer' is a highly successful crime novelist whose books have sold in their millions. He has a penthouse apartment, a beautiful wife, and a horde of adoring fans. His life is perfect, or so it seems from the outside.
On the inside, his world is falling to pieces. His father has just died, his wife is having an affair, and his latest work, the first deep and complex novel written to satisfy his intellectual yearnings, has been rejected by his publisher.
During this crisis, the writer resolves to cling to what he can. He will not lose everything. With this in mind, he commissions a young artist to paint a portrait of his wife, hoping that it will be the first step in winning her back. And so begins the quest of the writer, to bring his wife back to him in one week of perfect dates, sentimental reminiscences, and new experiences.
But during this week things begin to change. Not only for the writer, with his shifting priorities, but in the world outside. First, people start mistaking the writer for the protagonist of his rejected novel. Then, gradually, the city around him metamorphoses into the world of his own fiction. Will the writer be able to win back his wife, realising too late how much she would be to lose? Or will the world of his imagination swallow him, until he is unreachable by those he shunned during his former life?
