John Wallace is a seasoned veteran and long-time guardian of the parks and open spaces of the city of Santa Cruz. Wallace recounts stories from his younger days working as a firefighter in Moffett Field until the closure of his base by then-President Clinton led to him searching for newer pastures. One day he heard of an opening in Santa Cruz's Ranger Unit. Always wanting to serve the people of the city, he joined a small team of rangers in preserving the sanctity of the city's open spaces. He settled well into that role until one unsuspecting day, he got called into the office to be told that the entire division, including his own chief ranger, was being shut down, and the entirety of Santa Cruz's Ranger duties would be covered only by him. Wallace took this leap of faith and through his dedication and sheer force of will, spent the next five years as The Lone Ranger. In this book, he recounts his various experiences with homeless camps, drug dealers, and police officers, with his inspiring exploits resulting in positive publicity and a promotion to Chief Ranger. This book gives readers insight into what Wallace experienced during his time out in the parks, and how he dealt with and overcame challenges.
