About This Book

Ed Lane is hired as security officer for a team of ecologists and researchers restoring an island to its natural state. On site, the team's anthropologist uncovers a local myth about a young woman named Isabel who lived on the island in the 1800s and had a love affair with ship captain. She died after he abandoned her, and now haunts the island, taking out her vengeance on lonely men. Several have died over the years.

A month after Lane arrives, a ranch employee hangs himself. At the scene, Lane meets a young woman who says she is Isabel and he is her missing lover. He dismisses the encounter. After hunters decimate the island's non-native deer and elk, a triple-crescent moon appears in the sky, an earthquake occurs, wildlife disappear, and the island becomes eerily silent, as if reacting to the slaughter.

Another man dies, and Lane encounters Isabel again. Confused by her ghostly presence and other strange events, Lane consults a shaman who assists him on a vision quest that profoundly alters his understanding of Isabel, his connection to her, the spirits of nature, and his own existence.
