About This Book

Everyone knows the story. In the mid-1950s, a pop psychologist, together with outraged parents and politically motivated Congressmen, sought to put an end to horror comics and succeeded in bringing about a self-governing censorship body which, virtually overnight, put an end to the offensive EC comics and put many publishers of horror comics out of business. But there's more to the story. Horror comics were really collateral damage in the war against comic books in the 1950s, and the real target was crime comics. Compared to the movies of that decade, they were far more explicit and gruesome, so it is completely understandable that they would come under fire. This volume contains some of the best of these infamous crime comics from the late 1940s through the mid 1950s. They were shocking, they were depraved, and they were like nothing that anyone had ever seen before or since.
