Lennox Kemp was rather bored. Not that he harbored grand delusions of being the next Philip Marlowe or Lew Archer. But a worried, beautiful wife, a missing husband and his missing mistress just didn't make for an exciting case. Then Mrs. Frances Jessica Moss pulled out a king-size emerald as payment and Kemp had a hunch there was more to the case than met the eye.

He was right. Dead right. First, the missing Mr. Moss shows up quite alive. His mistress is found quite dead. Soon Lennox Kemp is following an emerald-littered trail of murder back fifty years. Someone, he decided, was playing a very clever game. Unfortunately all he'd been dealt were the wild cards....
