About This Book

Charley Cavanaugh lived on the outside of everyone's lives, pouring drinks, drawing a draught beer or two, listened to the locals who told him of their lives and thought he gave a damn. And Charley thought he liked it that way. Charley owns the Pepper Pot, a run down bar and liquor store downtown Globeville.Life in Globeville moved on with predictable sameness until Valerie, a pregnant girl, arrived in search for her sister. With nowhere else to turn, and to the complete surprise of everyone who thought they knew Charley, he takes her in so that she'll be safe. As time passes, Charley begins to reconnect with feelings he'd buried in the past. Before Valerie's baby is born, we find that she lost her beau in Korea before they had the chance to get married. She is thrown out by her overly conservative father and comes to Globeville in search of her sister only to find that she now works at the local Brothel. After the birth of Carla, we see Charley and Valerie falling for each other even though Charley thinks that there is a 10-year age difference. (Actually Valerie lies about her age and is only seventeen when she arrives in Globeville so the age difference is more like thirteen years.) Because of the age difference and the fact that Charley believes that raising Valerie's daughter in a bar is a bad idea, and that Valerie should have a better life, he starts going against his own desires and tries to push Valerie away. The tapestry of Globeville has many colors, twists and turns. It will make you laugh, cry and might even cause you to fall in love.
