In a faraway land the courageous and resourceful Eldrie wields her sword to fight off the warring multitudes. When she spares the life of the brave and handsome huntsman Huard, he swears an oath of fealty to her; and together they set off through war-torn lands, enchanted forests, and shimmering deserts to seek a healing mage: a gifted being who can show Eldrie how to use magical powers to aid the sick.

But Eldrie has a secret ... years ago she fled her father's kingdom, then rife with intrigues, rivalries, and deceits. Disguised as a wandering herbal healer, she vows never again to enter the world of rank, privilege, ceremony, and protocol. Huard has other ideas. As they battle enraged dragons, pilfering bandits, ghostly apparitions, and extremes of heat and cold, Huard tries to persuade her to accept a destiny for which she was never born... and reject a love for which her heart yearns.
