Teenager Minerva (Minnie) Neel's older sister, Luna, has gone missing along with her wild rebel of a boyfriend, Jem Harks. When Minnie joins forces with retired history professor Dr. Augusten Vanover to find Luna, she discovers a terrifying supernatural underworld populated by the Users--nightmarish creatures who enslave the souls of troubled youth by plying them with the Elixir. May has respectfully borrowed from Bram Stoker's classic vampire tale, DRACULA, to address the plague of drug addiction from the viewpoint of both victims and those who try to help them. His diorama-based illustrations add a haunting accent to this unique, timely retelling of the battle between Good and Evil.
