Ember Jacobs is a Deviant, a genetically modified human with the ability to control fire. For years her race has been kept secret from the rest of the world, but a powerful woman threatens to expose them all.

A war is coming.

Ember and her partner Selena Quincy, another Devi, are brought to the scene of a dead Devi, but they can't find any visible signs of how the man died. It appears that his life and his abilities were sucked from him. Both women are sent out to find a girl who holds the key to the future of the Deviant race. But they're not alone in seeking her out.

Trouble at every turn, Ember must confront her longtime mentor, a wayward lover, and embrace the full potential of her abilities. She's all that stands between her growing family and the exposure of the Devi race to the world.
