Detroit and Cherry is an unusual book about prison life, food, the United States, and freedom. It is a project by poet Tyler Dempsey (Newspaper Drumsticks) and visual artist/bestselling author Stephen Black. Detroit and Cherry is set in May, 2020 as the corona virus, and the resulting lockdowns, continued to alter daily life.The heart of the book is a ten mile journey undertaken by a celebrity chef who was falsely imprisoned at the Turin Federal Correctional Institution. Because of the virus, he is unexpectedly released early. He finds himself on the Ohio-Michigan border at dawn, on the morning of May 7, 2020. He has no money, no phone and no shoes. His destination: a pink house at the intersection of Detroit and Cherry, near downtown Toledo. He walks, shocked to be a free man in a world that is locked up. He constantly remembers his complex friendship with Tex, his last cellmate. Tex has a mysterious relationship with Sin.
