Life in a Kafkaesque office is a prison Tom Godot wanted to escape from. Work as a tech writer in a computer chip factory can be so boring! But he's in luck. He ghostwrites a family history for his boss, who returns the favor by finding him a publisher for his book about a conspiracy to hijack communication satellites. Tom gets more than he bargained for when he is an inexplicable success with Conspiracy! and is sent on a book tour, all expenses paid by the publisher. He has never met his elusive co-author, Harold Stevenson, who communicates only by encrypted electronic mail. Trouble is, he seems to have attracted "fans" who want to know more. It turns out there's a price for celebrity-his soul.
