Eldee Dupree, Dr. Barb Stark's dapper Atlanta lawyer, is being sued. Despite a heavy workload back in Duncan, she decides to sit in on a couple of depositions to help Eldee and also spend a few relaxing days at Starkhaven, her Atlanta estate. Soon she finds herself deep in a national forest staring at burned bodies and dodging bullets on Atlanta streets.. And her irritating ex in-laws, the prominent Starks of Atlanta, have been up to their eyeballs for decades in the murder plots. Back at her practice in Duncan, Barb begins work with a client who believes herself to be a witch, and who states that she will soon be murdered by inhuman creatures of the occult. The thing is, Barb does not believe in inhuman occult creatures. That doesn't stop the things that go bump in the night from trying to kill Barb along with her client. But those creatures have never met a dog like Malcolm, Barb's huge mixed-breed protector, nor have they encountered a woman as determined as Barb to find an explanation for everything. And if that is not trouble enough, her ex-husband wants to marry her again.
