Though his crime-scene days are behind him, retired Toronto police detective Mel Pickett is intrigued by the body discovered near his weekend cabin in the woods, and becomes an unofficial advisor to the one-man police force.

The corpse is identified as Timmy Marlow, a notorious womanizer. The folks of larch River are busy speculating which husband might have done it. Or which jilted lady ... or drinking pal with a grudge.

An arrest is made but Mel, with his finely honed instincts as a big-city cop, suspects there's more to the case than the obvious. The legwork he does reveals secrets buried in stone ... and a clever, nearly perfect crime and a devious killer.
