It is 1940, and the Office for the Cataloging of Unusual Occurrences is fighting a desperate war against weapons and creatures that defy understanding.

Things aren't just getting weird in Europe. On the home front, the papers are reporting on a hulking man in black, a mysterious force of nature that leaves criminals broken and terrified in his wake.

By day, he goes by Mickey Malloy, a run-down private detective who stumbles on Nazi spies battling the O.C.U.O. in his own hometown. Mick lends his brand of justice to the fight, but when the Office is involved, strange has a way of becoming normal. One inspiring speech later, and Mick finds himself recruited, butting heads with Mafia hit men, voodoo serial killers, riverboat pirates, gun-totting can-can lines, and swarms of carnivorous cockroaches. Whatever Mickey sees himself as, be it an animal, a patriot, a dispenser of justice, or a broken drunk, everyone who meets the business end of his club agrees on one thing: he's a real Bastard.
